About The Event

Up to three volunteers are needed to help create hardened campsites, maintain the trail to outhouse, close excess trails, and remove a number of downed trees by crosscut saw. The work requires good physical condition and an interest in learning basic trail/campsite maintenance techniques. Volunteers will use hand tools and natural materials such as logs and beach gravel to create durable camping surfaces, restore vegetation, and prevent erosion. Crosscut saws will be used to remove trees toppled during a 2018 wind event.

Volunteers will work alongside an Alaska Geographic youth crew for a portion of this trip. Camping locations are kept separate.

  • Roundtrip transportation will be provided by Forest Service vessel for volunteers (must be 18 years or older to ride on the vessel).
  • Participants will work under volunteer agreement with the Chugach National Forest and be provided all tools, materials, and personal protective equipment. Safety training will be provided.
  • Food and camping gear are not provided.
  • A $75 non-refundable registration fee per person is required to reserve your spot.

Trip difficulty: Moderate- Volunteers must be capable of camping and traveling in bear habitat, walking on uneven surfaces, carrying equipment up to 40 pounds, and working in cool and rainy conditions.
