About The Event
Join us at Blackstone Bay to work on the 17-mile camp area. This multi-year project has helped support the Forest Service in establishing world-class camping areas in the beautiful Blackstone Bay. This area is revered for its concentraiton of tidwater glaciers, glacial streams, and wildlife viewing. This project continues to service 17-mile, which has professionally hardened tent pads, two bear boxes, and an outhouse. This upcoming year, volunteers will work on the trail to the outhouse, help mitigate erosion, and work on staircase construction. All work is done using natural building materials found in the surrounding area. Voluneers will be led by Forest Service staff.Â
Volunteers will work alongside an Alaska Geographic youth crew for a portion of this trip. Camping locations are kept separate.
- Roundtrip transportation will be provided by Forest Service vessel for volunteers (must be 18 years or older to ride on the vessel).
- Participants will work under a volunteer agreement with the Chugach National Forest and will be provided all tools, materials, and personal protective equipment. Safety training will be provided.
- Food and camping gear are not provided.
- A $125 non-refundable registration fee per person is required to reserve your spot.
Trip difficulty: Moderate- Volunteers must be capable of camping and traveling in bear habitat, walking on uneven surfaces, carrying equipment up to 40 pounds, and working in cool and rainy conditions.
